Restored Hastings Pier named Britain's best new building
A historic pier in East Sussex devastated by fire in 2010 has won a prestigious architecture award after a multi-million pound redevelopment.
Hastings Pier, which reopened in April 2016, beat five other buildings to the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) Stirling Prize.
The redevelopment project took more than two years at a cost of £14.2m.
The pier was opened in 1872. Over the following 100 years it hosted dances, concerts by The Rolling Stones, The Who, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley, and all-night raves.
The pier had been neglected in recent years, and closed to the public in 2008 following storm damage. It was destroyed in a blaze in 2010.
Hastings Pier is a masterpiece in regeneration and an inspiration. The architects and local community have transformed a neglected wreck into a stunning, flexible new pier.
What the reopening will mean for Hastings?
– More than 300,000 extra visitors to Hastings per year (Hastings Pier Charity)
– An extra £1.2m for the local economy (Hastings Borough Council figures)
– Creation of 40 new jobs (Hastings Borough Council)
