Poison identified as Novichok, a nerve agent developed by Russia

Former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were poisoned by a military-grade nerve agent of a type developed by Russia, Theresa May has told MPs.

The PM said it was "highly likely" Russia was responsible for the Salisbury attack.

Salisbury toxic hotspots clean-up begins

Nine locations in Salisbury which are to be decontaminated following the poisoning of an ex-spy and his daughter have been surrounded by new barriers.

The Mill pub and Zizzi restaurant are among the places deemed to be still at risk by government scientists.

But officials say the city remains "safe for residents and visitors" and extra precautions need not be taken.

The nerve agent Novichok is believed to have been used in liquid form to target Sergei and Yulia Skripal last month.

Pair found unconscious in Wiltshire poisoned with same nerve agent as Skripals

A man and woman are in a critical condition after being exposed to an unknown substance, which counter terrorism officers are investigating.

The pair, believed to be Charlie Rowley, 45, and Dawn Sturgess, 44, were found unconscious at a house in Amesbury, Wiltshire, on Saturday.

It is understood tests are being carried out on the substance at a government chemical weapons laboratory.

Amesbury is about eight miles from the Salisbury Russian spy poisoning site.

Police have launched a murder inquiry after a woman exposed to the nerve agent Novichok in Wiltshire died.

Dawn Sturgess, 44, died in hospital on Sunday evening after falling ill on 30 June.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was "deeply concerned" about the incident - but said accusations that it was involved are "absurd".

Novichok death increases pressure on investigators

The death of Dawn Sturgess may not significantly change the mechanics of the Amesbury poisoning police investigation - but it will increase the pressure surrounding it.

About 100 detectives are already working round the clock to try to establish how Ms Sturgess and Charlie Rowley were contaminated by the nerve agent Novichok.

Swabs taken from them in hospital revealed the highest level of contamination on their hands, leading to the theory they picked something up.

It may well be that it was Ms Sturgess who came into first contact and Mr Rowley received secondary contamination from her, but that remains to be confirmed.
